Household application of nanotechnology

Nanotechnology application in the household is for self-cleaning or “easy-to-clean” surfaces on ceramics or glasses. Nanoceramic particles have improved the smoothness and heat resistance of common household equipments. Another application is in sunscreens. The traditional chemical UV protection approach suffers from its poor long-term stability. A sunscreen based on mineral nanoparticles such as titanium dioxide offer several advantages. Surfaces protected with nano-coatings will reduce time and costs required for cleaning processes. Nano-Coating adds to the surface easy-to-clean and hydrophobic properties, which means that contaminants, smears and limescale can be easily removed using only wet cloth. Nanotechnology based product are available to protect sanitary surfaces in bathrooms, toilets, kitchens or window panes, where frequent contact with water, oil and dirt can quickly soil surfaces. Nano-coating protects treated substrates from adhering of dirt by effect of repelling foreign substances. Nano-Coating add easy-to-clean and water repellent (beading effect) properties to the metals and materials like stainless steel utensils. Cleaning does not require detergents to be used and damp cloth is sufficient. Nano-coatings make glass surfaces to be self - cleaning ones. TiO2 based nano-coating when applied onto glass surfaces turns their properties into self-clean because TiO2 under UV rays creates a photo-catalytic reaction on sealed surface and the photo-catalyst breaks down dirt which is being rinsed off with rainfall.
