Nanotechnology for food production and processing

In future nanotechnology will be used to transform food by shaping molecules and atoms. Food will be wrapped in “smart” safety packaging that can detect spoilage or harmful contaminants. Future products will enhance and adjust their color, flavor, or nutrient content to accommodate each consumer’s taste or health needs. The food and agriculture industries have been investing billions of dollars into nanotechnology research. There are already a lot of unlabeled nano food products in the market. Since there is no mandatory product labeling, it is impossible to account how many commercial food products now contain nano ingredients. However it has been estimated that there are now over 500 nano food products available in the market worldwide. There are many areas for nanotechnology food research such as nano-modification of seed and fertilisers/ pesticides, food ‘fortification’ and modification, interactive ‘smart’ food and ‘smart’ packaging and food tracking.
