Preparation of fullerenes
Do you like this story?
Preparation is done by graphite vaporization under high energy laser pulse in inert atmosphere, followed by onization and mass spectrometry.Electrical discharge is made between graphite electrodes in an atmosphere of He at 100 torr. The resulting soot is scraped from the evaporation chamber and dissolved in benzene. Further separation and purification leads to C60 in gram scale.Structural features of C60Structure is made up of 20 hexagons and 12 pentagons, truncated icosahedron with 60 atoms C sp2, perfectly equivalent, a kind of “huge atom” of diameter of the inner cavity as 3.6 Å.
