Nanotechnology for soil reclamation
Do you like this story?
Nano-technology product called SoilSET has been developed and used for burn area reclamation. Nano-structured matrix is created from organic biodegradable ingredients to make a soil binder similar to natural plant and crop residues, providing dust control, erosion control, soil moisture retention and re-vegetation stimulant for seeding efforts. The application of the product is claimed to simultaneously increase production while lowering product cost. Once the SoilSET concentrate has been mixed with either fresh or brackish water, an electro-chemical reaction creates a new organic binder at the nano particle level, which agglomerates soil particles from 10 to 20 mm. into the surface. SoilSET-treated soil retains water, reduces runoff and helps germinate seeds. SoilSET is also designed to prevent fiber clumping and increase application spread rate and pumping ability. Nanoparticle like fullerenes, nanoscale carbon spheres were found not to harm microbes when released into the soil.
