Microtechnology such as microelectronics and nanotechnology are currently very successful technologies. Microelectronics is done through top down approach where as nanotechnology fabrication is done by either top down or bottom up approaches. With top-down miniaturisation approach, making of smaller structures is relatively imprecise, but with bottom-up approach, making of larger precise chemical structures is possible, but it already exists as a scientific subject as synthetic chemistry. However, recent advances in nanoscale instrumentation (e.g. imaging at the nanoscale, nanomanipulation), molecular biology (e.g. biological molecular motors) and chemomechanics (e.g. responsive functional molecules) have created the conditions and provided the tools for a new engineering discipline named Nano engineering wich deals with precise control of mechanical structures at the molecular scale.
