Nano food and health

Nanotechnology is already here and used in hundreds of everyday products from food packaging to computer keyboards.
Nano-products in common use today are many and few among them are lightweight tennis rackets and bicycles, and sunscreens containing clear, nonwhite versions of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Similarly three famous foods are a brand of canola cooking oil called Canola Active Oil, a tea called Nanotea and a chocolate diet shake called Nanoceuticals Slim Shake Chocolate.

NiƱo modified food

Nano foodThe goal of the nano food technology is to create specialized food products that behave differently from the naturally occurring ones. They can be altered to aid in assimilation and digestion while their taste and nutritional value gets enhanced greatly. The nano food particles can also be programmed to be released into the blood stream at specific times thus helping us reap the total benefit of the nutrients contained within. Nano modified food will help in preventing obesity to a great extent, may also slow down digestion considerably and prevent certain life style diseases. The nano food technology is also about altering the molecular properties, something that has not proven to be fully safe so far.

Effect of nano food

Nanoparticles, however, are considered as highly reactive and it is not yet clear whether under certain conditions they are toxic and harm the body. The effect of nano food products on the environment and the human body has not been understood properly and needs more research. Research and industry know a whole range of potential nanotech uses for food. However, still only very little is known about the risks of the technology and how the consumers perceive them. The minute nanoparticles have the capability to enter the nucleus of cells provided they have the right properties. Early scientific evidence indicates that some nanomaterials produce free radicals which destroy or mutate DNA and can cause damage to the liver and kidneys. The researcher find that the possible diffusion of nanoparticles from the food packaging into the product can not be not be considered as a threat even though there are argument against nanotechnology. Products List of food products currently containing nano-products include: Canola Active Oil, Nanotea, Fortified Fruit Juice, Nanoceuticals Slim Shake, NanoSlim beverage, Oat Nutritional Drink and 'Daily Vitamin Boost' fortified fruit juice.Untested
A report indicated that untested nanotechnology materials are being used in more than 100 food products and packaging including; nutritional supplements, flavor and color additives, cling wrap and chemicals used in agriculture. It said existing regulations in the US did not require testing or labeling for nanomaterials when they were created from existing approved chemicals, despite major differences in potential toxicity.
