Timed drug delivery using gold nanoparticles

Delivering multiple numbers of drugs say for treating HIV and cancer etc., has been made now possible. Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a drug-delivery system using gold nanoparticles that, when exposed to infrared light, can release multiple drugs attached to their surfaces. This will help to have more control of diseases to get a synergistic effect with more than one drug. The drugs are made in the form called nanocapsules and nanobones made of gold nanoparticles which can be made to melt by exposing them to infrared waves. When they melt, drug payloads attached to their surfaces are released. Current drug-delivery devices exist that can release two drugs, but the timing of their release must be built into the device and it seems it cannot be controlled from outside the body.
