A nanotechnology device for pathogen detection

A device that helps the rapid identification of pathogens using nanotechnology has been developed. This device is equipped with an optical reading system to emit fluorescence signal during Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) in real time that enables the rapid identification of pathogens. A chip incorporated in the system integrates the concentrating of the sample, the rupture of its membrane, the enzymatic multiplication of its DNA and finally identification of the pathogen. For operating this one has to insert two syringes into the device and the analysis is done automatically. The application depends on the type of sample and the pathogen to be detected. Two major applications possible are reported to be (i) the detection of campylobacteriosis in farm animals (animal health application) and (ii) the identification of salmonellosis amongst persons (human health application).
