Characteristics of nanotubes

Nanotubes inherit several important properties due to the presence of graphene tubes parallel to the filament axis. Very unique combination of properties of this material are furnished below. Nanotubes can exhibit extremely high surface area
Single wall nanotubes can be metallic or semi-conducting
Chemically inert and not attacked by strong acids or alkali
High aspect ratio structures with diameters in nanometers and lengths in microns
High mechanical strength (tensile strength 60GPa) and modulus (Young’s modulus 1TPa)
High electrical conductivity (10-6 ohm m typically), and for well crystallised nanotubes ballistic transport is observed
High thermal conductivity (1750-58 00 W/mK)
Can carry high current densities (107 -109 A/cm2 ) because of covalent bonding and as electrical conductors they do not suffer from electromigration or atomic diffusion
CVD method is used to produce high purity single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with various diameters and narrow diameter distribution. MWNTs has purity more than 98wt% max. Single wall carbon nanotubes are available commercially at 60wt% to 90wt% purity and as functionalized SWNTs. Double wall carbon nanotubes are available commercially as high purity DWNT and functionalized DWNT. Multi wall carbon nanotubes are available in sizes of 5-10nm, 10-20nm(aligned) as short MWNT, functionalized MWNT and industrial grade MWNTs. Organic intermediates are available as such and as pharmaceutical raw materials.
